Deceased Name: ARTHUR C. JOSEPHS

ARTHUR C. JOSEPHS, 100, of Duluth, died Saturday, March 10, 2007 in his home.

 

He was born Dec. 20, 1906 in Duluth to Hyman and Etta (Cook) Josephs.

 

Arthur was a graduate of Duluth Central High School and attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He received a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering in 1928 and continued to a master's degree in 1929. He then worked for an engineering firm in New York for a short time until the Depression and left for Vienna, Austria. Arthur earned his doctoral degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Vienna, where he met his future wife, Adrienne Hoffer. They returned to the United States and at the onset of WWII he enlisted in the Navy. He was assigned as a commander to a battalion in the See Bees and served in the Alaska Campaign. Towards the end of the war, he married Adrienne and returned to Duluth to assume the leadership of the Zalk-Josephs Company until its sale in the early 70's.

 

Arthur was involved in many civic activities and boards, including the City Planning Commission and past president for many years, as well as president and member of the Ordean Foundation. He also served on the board at St. Luke's Hospital and a member of the Symphony Association. Arthur volunteered with the Community Chest and the Beck Foundation and many others.

 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Adrienne Josephs on Feb. 2, 2007; parents; brother, Irving; sisters, Sylvia Berger, and Murial Cowan.

 

He is survived by his son, Howard Josephs of Duluth; and daughter, Susan Josephs of Duluth.

 

He will be deeply missed by all the caregivers that worked with him.

 

PRIVATE GRAVESIDE SERVICE:1will be held. Interment in Temple Emmanuel Cemetery. An informal gathering for caregivers and friends at 126 N. 33rd Ave E. at 4p.m Tuesday. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. 2nd St Duluth, MN 55805, 218-727-3555.

Deceased Name: ADRIENNE JOSEPHS

Duluth

 

ADRIENNE JOSEPHS, 93, of North 33rd. Ave. E., died Friday, Feb. 2, 2007 at home.

 

She was born May 8, 1913 in Sezeged, Hungary.

 

Adrienne attended the University of Vienna where she majored in culinary studies and received degrees in dietetics and food chemistry. She arrived in the United States in 1935 and attended Columbia University for her post graduate studies. Adrienne worked in the hotel industry, including the Waldorf Astoria. She married Arthur Josephs in 1944, and the following year they moved to Duluth. Mr. and Mrs. Josephs both contributed greatly to Duluth's civic affairs. Adrienne was a board member and formidable fund-raiser for the Duluth-Superior Symphony, Wadso and the Midwestern Metropolitan Opera. Perhaps her greatest achievement was founding and raising funds for the Beck Foundation to benefit WDSE public television. She was also actively involved in facilitating development of the Bayfront. Mrs. Josephs was named Women of the Year in 1988 for her extensive involvement in civic affairs for over 42 years.

 

Survivors include her husband Arthur, her daughter Susan Josephs, and her son Howard Josephs, all of Duluth.

 

SERVICES: will be private. The family will receive friends at the house at 126 N. 33rd. Ave. E on Tuesday from 3-5 p.m. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 218-727-3555.
